Surfing with sunglasses?!? Won’t they fall off when you wipeout?
Many surfers are now using sunglasses while catching waves on their surf safaris to far away tropical destinations where the sun feels hotter and it’s rays brighter and more damaging on the eyes. This is a good step towards protecting your eyes from harsh UV rays, but isn’t limited to tropical locations.

Big Wave Surfing With OCEAN Surf Sunglasses
Surfers are always catching waves at sunset when the waves seem to have a special magic to them. The only problem is west coast surfers are looking straight into the sun as they scan the horizon for incoming waves. Doing this repeatedly can lead to prolonged eye damage without proper UV protection.
That sounds reasonable, but won’t they fall off when you wipeout? Most of the time no, as we have designed OCEAN surfing sunglasses to withstand shock and stay on your head with an adjustable elastic strap and leash system that can take the hardest beatings. The strap fits snugly to the back of the head, hugging the glasses on the face, and if they do get ripped off in an especially violent wipeout, they are attached to the surfer with a simple leash so you can find them quickly and paddle back out for your next wave.

Windsurfing Wipeout: Testing OCEAN sport sunglasses
On a hot sunny day sunglasses are obviously a comfort to wear on the eyes, however even when the sun is not shining brightly, UV rays passing through foggy, hazy or cloudy conditions can damage your eyes. Choosing the right sunglasses can improve vision under these conditions and help save your eyes from damage.

Double Trouble: Sun Glare Off Water
Ultraviolet solar radiation (UV) is the most damaging light in the spectrum and for this reason sunglasses are designed to block it…at least good quality sunglasses do. Many cheap sunglasses without full UV protection actually dialate the eyes with their dark lenses but let the UV rays penetrate the eyes, causing more damage than good. It’s important that you wear 100% UV protection sunglasses when outdoors.
Extreme sports and adventure sports athletes can suffer more eye damage from UV rays because at high altitudes sun rays are hundreds of times more intense than at sea level due to the thinner atmosphere, and reflections off snow, water and sand also amplify the power of the UV rays considerably.
OCEAN sport sunglasses are developed not only to block all UV rays when doing sports, but to withstand impacts and abuse that can occur during these extreme sports adventures.
Have you ever windsurfed in the pouring rain or a hailstorm? Many hardcore windsurfers do it all the time to enjoy the heavy winds that usually accompany bad weather. Some of windsurfing’s most memorable days can be those during the cold of winter.
Besides the frozen fingers that you can try to keep warm with neoprene gloves, a pair of good windsurfing sunglasses goes a long way to keep you eyes protected from the pelting rain and the beating hail that at high speeds during windsurfing can sting like mad and can cause eye damage.

High winds and big waves makes for great windsurfing.
Rather than closing your eyes while windsurfing in these conditions, we choose to sport a pair of water-repelling sports sunglasses like our Fiji and Maui watersports models with lightly tinted lens and impact protection. Meanwhile for sunnier and warrmer conditions, nothing beats our favorite Mentawai model, boasting good looks and a darker lens.
OCEAN is proud to be a sponsor of the extreme sports production company Adventure Imagery, supplying their athletes and cameramen with our rugged sports sunglasses. Shooting extreme sports stock footage in some of the most remote and dangerous locations around the world, they can expect high performance out of their outdoor eyewear while not sacrificing any performance of their own.
Shooting extreme skiing footage on high mountain peaks in Alaska, big wave surfing in Northern California, world record freediving deep off the coast of Turkey, kitesurfing and windsurfing in Spain, they put our sunglasses through severe conditions and we are happy to report that they perform as hard as the Adventure Imagery team does.
“After many years abusing and losing my sunglasses, now I use the OCEAN sports sunglasses that have a strap on the back that tightens around my head so that when I am leaning out of a helicopter or shooting from a fast boat alongside a windsurfer, I can concentrate on the action and not on my glasses. They even stay on while skydiving,” reports Justin Wheeler, on-location producer for AdventureImagery.com. “We also shoot with polarized filters on the lenses which makes the clouds really defined and the colors very vibrant, so it is nice to find durable sunglasses that are also polarized so I can enjoy the view while not shooting.”
